Compared with the previous 1 Series, the new model is a little longer (by 42mm) and a tad taller (by 25mm) but you’ll mainly notice the new, strikingly flat front end that sits lower to the road. The wide, forward-leaning BMW radiator grille features vertical and diagonal bars, while the proportions retain the familiar long bonnet and flowing roof line of other BMW models. The signature BMW ‘Hofmeister kink’ on the C pillar now carries the 1 Series graphic, while the long roof spoiler and side skirts emphasise the sporty proportions. Inside, there’s space for five with versatile loadspace that extends from 300 litres to 1,135 litres (in the 120 model).
PERFORMANCE
Two models are offered at launch. The BMW 120 is front-drive and has a 48-volt mild hybrid system which assists the 170HP three-cylinder petrol engine to an impressive 47-53mpg on the combined WLTP cycle, with CO2 emissions of 135-121 g/km, depending on specification. Yet it’s no slouch; 0-62mph takes just 7.8 seconds. Alternatively, the performance flagship M135 X Drive is all-wheel drive and develops 300HP with 400Nm of torque. It features the Adaptive M Chassis with sport steering and intelligent all-wheel drive and accelerates from zero to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds. Both models transmit their power via a dual-clutch 7-speed Steptronic transmission – there’s no manual option.
TECHNOLOGY
Settle into the well-appointed and welcoming interior and you’ll note the fully digital display system, which includes a 10.25-inch Information Display and a 10.7-inch Control Display. This uses the latest BMW Operating System 9 and provides intuitive, easy to access functionality via an always-visible array of controls. Smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ is available as standard while BMW ID and My BMW App make it easy to personalise your ownership experience. Standard features across all models include automatic air conditioning, alarm system, electrically folding exterior mirrors, LED headlights, heated front seats and BMW Live Cockpit Plus including the BMW Maps cloud-based navigation system. The optional Tech Plus Package includes BMW Live Cockpit Professional with BMW Head-Up Display as well as Parking Assistant Plus.
SAFETY
Standard features on all 1 Series models include the Driving Assistant with front collision warning, Lane Departure Warning, Exit Warning and Traffic Sign Recognition, as well as the Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant. Among the additional options are Steering and Lane Control Assist, Automatic Speed Limit Assist and route guidance when using Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function.
