MINI COOPER 5-DOOR It’s a MINI Cooper, but with more space and five doors. What’s not to like? What do you do when you’re addicted to the looks, performance and pizzazz of the MINI Cooper, but can’t persuade your growing brood/grown-up friends to clamber into the back anymore? The answer is wonderfully simple. You get the MINI Cooper 5-door: same appeal, same go-kart handling, but with a little extra legroom in the back and two more doors to access it. DESIGN

What makes a MINI, design wise? First, it’s the short bonnet, short overhangs and instantly recognisable front end, with round headlamps and octagonal grille. Then there’s the visual separation through colour of the body, wraparound glasshouse and stepped roof. The latest generation has a clean, contemporary look, thanks to the smooth surfacing and minimal trim. At the rear, the redesigned triangular taillights still feature the popular Union Jack graphic. All this is true of the latest 3-door; the difference is that the MINI Cooper 5-door is 172mm longer, with a 72mm longer wheelbase. That makes for more comfortable rear seat passengers, and the good news is that it still looks every inch a MINI.

PERFORMANCE

There are two models to choose from: the three-cylinder, 154hp MINI Cooper C delivers up to 47 miles per gallon, with CO2 emissions of 149-136 g/km depending on spec. The 0-62mph dash takes exactly 8.0 seconds. Alternatively, the MINI Cooper S has four cylinders, develops 204hp and zooms through the same 0-62mph barrier in 6.8 seconds, with a top speed of 150mph. In both cases the increased tyre diameter of 625mm gives improved ride comfort and driving dynamics, and both models have a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

TECHNOLOGY

It’s not just what the MINI Cooper does, it’s the way that it does it. You get a wonderfully round central 24cm touchscreen, which uses OLED technology and displays a variety of graphic backgrounds according to which of the seven MINI Experience modes you select. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity come as standard. Voice command via the words ‘Hey MINI’ will activate a 3D car avatar or MINI’s digital companion, Spike. As with the three-door MINI Cooper, you have a choice of Classic, Exclusive and Sport, with each trim offering an array of exterior and interior personalisation options.

SAFETY

The new MINI Cooper 5-door comes with a wide array of driver assistance systems designed to keep you and other road users safe and unstressed. One really useful feature when parking in towns is the Safe Exit function, which monitors the area around the parked vehicle and warns approaching road users before the door is opened. This function not only delays the unlocking of the doors, but also uses light signals outside the vehicle to warn of a possible collision. Meanwhile the optional Driving Assistant Plus package includes assistance for steering, lane keeping, and automatic speed and distance control to ensure even more comfortable driving experiences.
