Ahead of its official debut at the New York Motor Show in late March the new MINI John Cooper Works Convertible has been revealed to the press.
The new JCW Convertible has a chunkier, sportier look, particularly with regards to its cooling vents, positioned near the grille, and its sills. A soft-top opens in 18 seconds when driving at speeds of up to 19mph. Standard features include 17-inch wheels, with 18-inch wheels an option too. Inside, sports seats and stainless steel pedals, air conditioning and parking sensors all come as standard.
This new convertible features a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine that also comes with the JCW hatchback. This delivers 228bhp and 320Nm of torque, a respective increase of 20bhp and 39bhp, making it a more potent vehicle than the previous-generation JCW Convertible and the Cooper S Convertible.
A convertible car requires extra strengthening so this open-topped JCW is 105kg heavier than the hatchback. The additional weight has a marginal impact on acceleration, which is 0-60mph in approximately 6.8 seconds, with standard six-speed manual transmission. An optional six-speed automatic gearbox can achieve 0-60mph in 6.7 seconds and a maximum speed of 150mph. The automatic option offers 47.9mpg, an improvement on previous JCW Convertible iterations, while the manual model is capable of 43.5mpg.
