Porsche’s design team has managed to make the new generation Macan significantly sportier and more coupé-like than the previous model, while retaining ample space and headroom for rear seat passengers. Based on the new Premium Performance Electric (PPE) platform, the Macan is longer and wider overall, with a longer wheelbase too. The boot holds 840 litres, extending to 1,348 litres with the rear seats down, and there’s also a useful 84-litre ‘frunk’ beneath the low, sloping bonnet. Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) and a drag coefficient of 0.25 make the new Macan one of the most aerodynamic SUVs on the market – with positive benefits for range and power consumption.
PERFORMANCE
The Macan Turbo Electric is powered by a 95kWh battery, giving it a range of up to 367 miles. Given fast DC charging at up to 270 kW, the battery can be replenished from 10 to 80 per cent in just 21 minutes. With permanently excited PSM electric motors on both front and rear axles, the all-wheel drive powertrain develops up to 639PS in overboost mode, for a 0-62mph acceleration time of just 3.3 seconds. The Macan Turbo comes as standard with Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), an electronically controlled differential lock on the rear axle, as well as air suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). Optional rear-wheel steering gives a compact turning circle of 11.1 metres in when manoeuvring, while delivering exceptional driving stability at higher speeds.
TECHNOLOGY
Driver instrumentation is conveyed via a free-standing 12.6-inch, curved-design instrument cluster, with the option of a head-up display with augmented reality, putting navigation arrows within the driver’s real-world view. A central 10.9-inch display controls infotainment, augmented by switches for frequently used functions. An optional third display ahead of the front seat passenger is tinted to avoid distracting the driver and can play videos on the move. The next-generation infotainment system is based on Android Automotive OS, and along with Porsche Communication Management (PCM) offers faster, more intuitive response to inputs. Say ‘Hey Porsche’ to request routes, including charging stops, at lightning speed. A new Porsche App Centre allows you to access popular apps from third-party providers and install them directly in the infotainment display.
SAFETY
Standard safety systems include forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking (detects cars, pedestrians, cyclists and forward cross-traffic), lane-keeping assist, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning, and front and rear parking sensors. A surround-view parking camera system is optional, as is Porsche InnoDrive, which enhances the adaptive cruise control system with lane-centring steering assist and automatic speed adjustments based on speed limit and corners.
