From November 1, 2012, all new tyres have been labelled to show their performance in three key areas: fuel efficiency, wet braking and exterior noise emissions. The new labels are designed to resemble the efficiency ratings on household appliances, so you can see the safety and performance of your chosen tyres at a glance.
Your choice of tyres has a significant impact on the economy and CO2 emissions of your vehicle. A more economical set can reduce your vehicle’s fuel consumption by up to 7.5 percent and reduce your carbon footprint. The new A-to-G grading system quickly shows you the efficiency of any tyre you select.
Under damp road conditions, all drivers will need to adjust braking distances. Wet weather adversely affects the performance of both tyres and brakes, making both stopping distance and time longer. With a full set of four tyres graded A on the new scale, you can potentially stop up to 18 metres sooner from 50mph.
On the new labelling, the noise level from each tyre is listed in decibels for simplicity. Noise pollution can be distracting, and while selecting a vehicle with an insulated cabin can help, choosing quieter tyres that deliver just as highly on performance is a real benefit to all motorists.
